Después de la escuela secundaria, se licenció en física en 1961 y estudió antropologías de la Universidad Americana en 1980. En 1987 se doctoró en Filosofía de la Antropología.<br />

De 1961 a 1981 fue profesor en el Physicist National Bureau en Gaithsburg, Maryland, Estados Unidos, y de 1982 a 1987 fue profesor en la Universidad de Gallaudet en Washington, Estados Unidos. <br />

Luego trabajó en el Instituto Nacional de Tecnología para Sordos en Rochester, Nueva York, Estados Unidos, hasta 2001. <br />
<br />
Simon J. Carmle esta muy considerado en el campo de la antropología y especialmente en el campo del folclore para sordo sordo.<br />
<br />
En 1992 fundó la Sociedad de Magos Sordos del Mundo. Investiga y publica biografías de magos sordos.<br />
